Traveling Bear

Traveling Bear's name says it all. He loves to travel, explore and meet new friends. He had the pleasure of attending Eeyore's 45th Birthday Party in Austin and had a blast. He had no problems maneuvering through the crowds of people and dogs. He loved all the attention he received and wagged his tail the whole time. He was the life of the party! Traveling Bear has impeccable manners both inside the home and out on a adventure. So if you are someone who enjoys taking their dog to all the dog friendly events in Central Texas he will fit right in.

Traveling Bear is a 5 year old, 80 pound, Shepherd mix. He is house trained, crate trained, walks like a pro on leash and can sit on command. He does require a home without cats. If you are looking for a wonderful, well trained traveling buddy please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

Happy Mother's Day, Puppy Grandma!  Love, Angus + Dudley

Gretl

Gretl and her sister Louisa were playing on a busy road. I guess their parents never told them, the road is for cars and it is very dangerous for puppies. Fortunately, a Blue Dog volunteer rescued them before anything bad happened. The girls were infested with fleas and have patches of no hair where they have scratched themselves raw. After baths, vaccinations and a good healthy meal they are feeling much better. Gretl is the little one, weighing 21 pounds at 4 months of age. She looks like a heeler mix and will probably be around 40 pounds full grown. Gretl loves to sit in your lap and watch all the other dogs play. She is very sweet. Gretl already knows to sit for a treat. She is learning house training and crate training too. If you would like more information on her, email kathy@bluedogrescue.com.

Louisa

Louisa and her sister Gretl were playing on a busy road. Louisa is the big sister, she weighs 25 pounds at 4 months of age. Louisa is a heeler mix and will be around 50 pounds full grown. Louisa loves to play with the other dogs in her foster home. She really wants the old grumpy dogs to like her and sits very calmly in front of them waiting for some acknowledgement that they like her too. When Louisa is tired, then she is ready for her Human loving and will cuddle with you and give you kisses. She is learning house training and crate training. If you would like more information on her, email kathy@bluedogrescue.com.

Thanks to Paul and Sue for their donation to the dogs.
Rick sends his love to all the Blue Dogs hoping they all find new homes soon.

Lil' Mikey's Brave Story

This adorable three-month old baby is named Lil' Mikey. Recently, he was tossed over someone's fence with his front and back legs hog-tied and a sock pulled over his head. Poor little guy! Thankfully, a good Samaritan found him and took Lil' Mikey to the local animal shelter. He was bruised, sore, and shaken up. Black dogs are commonly overlooked at animal shelters, and after many days with no interest, Mikey was about to be euthanized. On his final day, Blue Dog Rescue was able to snatch him up and shower him with kisses. It seemed like smooth sailing from there but three days later Mikey broke out with Parvo. The virus was caught early enough and he was hospitalized immediately. He has since made a full recovery and is now enjoying good meals, a blankie, and kind words. Even though Lil' Mikey has had some tough luck, he is very well socialized and comes up to everyone he meets with a wagging tail and puppy kisses. He loves to climb into your lap or rub against your pant leg like a kitten. Lil' Mikey seems to be a Black Lab/Pit mix and weighs about 15 pounds. He LOVES to fetch his mini tennis ball and roll over with it in his mouth for a good belly scratchin'. Due to poor diet and stress in the past, he has some minor hair loss spots that won't take long to clear up. If you look into his giant, sad puppy eyes you can see Lil' Mikey is so thankful to be alive and eager to please. lisarae@bluedogrescue.com

Mikey is settling very well into his foster home!  He's put on a healthy amount of weight and made some good cat and dog friends.  He is crate trained and sleeps well through the night.  His previously spotty coat is now growing in SO soft and shiny.  Potty-training is going fantastic and his new tricks are to sit and stay on command.   Mikey is an excellent listener for a puppy.

Mamie

There she lay under a tree in the middle of nowhere, waiting patiently. A good samaritan, after noticing her while driving by on the way to work, stopped to check on her when she was still there that evening! We don't know whether this girl was dumped, or how long she lay there on her own, but Mamie was immediately grateful for kind words and a big bowl of food. We were amazed that nobody was looking for this sweet, well-behaved dog!

Unfortunately, Mamie has more obstacles to overcome. She has a severe case of heartworms that will require careful treatment, and a tooth or two that will need to be extracted. Although she handles steps fine, plays fetch, and is happy to hop up into the car for rides, Mamie's hips look quite arthritic on x-rays. Since she doesn't seem painful and because of her age, the vet thinks the best course of action is to keep her on a joint supplement and administer pain meds as needed rather than surgery. She's a very happy girl and will even bounce around a bit when she's especially excited (like when her foster mom gets home from work, or dinner is about to be served). Mamie is a lovely, lovely old soul. She's patient with the puppies in her foster home and adores attention. At around 8-9 years old, she's no spring chicken, but she's still got a lot of life to live (and love to give)! Everyone at the vet commented about what a good girl she was. They didn't even have to sedate her for hip X-rays, which is very uncommon; most dogs object strenuously to the awkward positions! Mamie is a 60 pound female Black Lab, housetrained, good with cats, other dogs, and is . For more information, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Thanks to Robert T. for his donation.

Alaula

Alaula is a Hawaiian name that means "light of early dawn". She will be happy to wake up every morning to hugs and kisses from you. Alaula was found running down a busy highway during rush hour. She was scooped up to safety and taken to the vet. She spent several days waiting but nobody called, nobody came and nobody cared. She is now enjoying being spoiled by her foster family and lights up every time see she them. She is a definite lap dog and would like to share yours.

Alaula is a 6 pound (she needs to gain about 3 pounds per the vet) 1 year old Chihuahua/Dachshund. She is in good health, spayed, crate trained, working on house training, and walks well on a leash. She loves to play with other dogs her size and kids ages 12 and up will work best for her. For more information on her please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

Donny Osmond

And they called it puppy love Oh, I guess they'll never know ... How we wish this was a story of nothing but puppy love, but it's not. Our little Donny Osmond needs your love, prayers and support. Blue Dog received a call that there was a injured puppy that needed help. No one had called when he was first injured and he had been laying for two days unable to move. He was covered with feces, urine and was severely dehydrated. He was rushed to the vet and immediately sedated as he was in so much pain. The vet found that his back leg was was broken in six places (it looked like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle), his lower jaw broken in three places and he had a deep laceration to his chest. Infection had also set into the chest area from laying in filth so long. He was to ill for surgery at this point and was kept sedated and given fluids for several days. Once his vital signs improved he had surgery. His back leg had to be amputated, his bottom jaw is now wired together (he will be eating soft food for at least two months) and the laceration cleaned and closed. Now begins a long recovery. He is trying hard to stand up but does require some assistance, as he is having to learn to balance on three legs and is still very sore from the accident. He is really trying hard and even though it's hard on him he still wags his tail and offers you kisses. His foster family is so proud of how brave he is and love him with all their hearts. Please consider making a donation to Blue Dog in his name as his medical bills were high. We will be updating his story and pictures as he continues to heal and grow stronger. Please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com with any questions you have about Donny.

Thank you to everyone who has sent donations, get well wishes, and love to Donny.  He is feeling so much better.  His balance has improved, he is walking and starting to run a little bit.  He will be at our Perros De Mayo event on May 4th so please come by and see him.

Please consider donating via PayPal to help cover Donny Osmand's care.

Mr. Pink

What?  You think a name like Mr. Pink is funny?  Well I've got news for you - I'm perfectly happy with it.  I love being Mr. Pink.  In fact, I'm just happy.  I like to run.  I like to play.  I like to chase a toy or two.  I'm about 2 years old and weigh just around 17 pounds.  That makes me just the right size - not too small, not too big.  Best guess is that I am a Chiba-Inu.  That's Chihuahua and Shiba Inu.  Or I guess you could go with Shiba Chinu.  Who cares?  What counts is that I'm awesome.  Email my foster mom at laura@bluedogrescue.com for more info.

Kathleen says "You are precious, Mr. Pink."

Beignet

Hi! I'm Beignet and I'm looking for my perfect cafe-au-lait! I was stuck in a scary place with a bunch of other puppies. A lot of the puppies were disappearing, including my brother. I was worried my time was about up. Fortunately, 2 very nice Blue Dog fosters rescued me just in time. My fosters say I'm very sweet, just like a beignet, and love to play with my foster sister. I'm quickly becoming crate trained (I don't even cry when put in my crate) and am working on becoming house trained. I can even sit on command for a yummy treat! The vet said I'm in good shape. I've had my first vaccination and was recently spayed. I'm approximately 14 weeks old, a lab/terrier mix, and will most likely be 50-60 pounds when I'm all grown up. If you would like more information, please contact mary@bluedogrescue.com.

I'd like to sponsor Beignet in Loving Memory of Lucy, The Fun Nazi, from Allison and Cooper, her cousin.
Love to Beignet...who reminds us of our own rescue dog Sassy. - Mark & Lisa

Hoyt

Hoyt looked like he was in really bad shape, when he was rescued from the shelter. He had no hair due to demodex mange. No one wanted him and he was very sad. All it's taken is some TLC and medication to get things started. His hair is now growing back in, and he is as cute as cute can be.

Hoyt is a 2 year old, 8 pound Chihuahua mix. He likes to play with his best friend Larkin and the other small dogs at his foster home. He has been introduced to the cats and would prefer a home without them. He is up to date on vaccines, neutered, house trained and crate trained. Please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com for more information on Hoyt.

Margaret

Spitfire, is Margaret's nickname at her foster home. She loves to run, bounce and wrestle her toys to the ground. When you walk into the room she is the first one to sit up and ask for your attention. There is nothing shy about her.

Margaret is a 8 week old 6 pound border collie mix. She has a soft furry coat, has started her puppy vaccines, had a great check up with the vet and will be ready for a new home soon. Please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com to set up a time to meet Margaret.

Sponsored by Sharon - Happy Mother's Day! - Love, Kellie, Jason, Teddy, Ariel, Maddie, Riley, and Hopper

Anastasia

Anastasia is about three years old, housetrained, impeccable manners, and a dream on the leash. She's a very happy girl; her tail wags all the time and she's usually wearing a big doggie grin. Annie is a Red Heeler mix who currently weighs around 55 pounds, although she is a bit on the chubby side and around 50 would be a good weight for her. We're working on that! She's a total flirt with the old man dog in her foster home, and seems to get along well with all the girls too. She is spayed, hw negative and on prevention, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. Annie is a very "easy" dog and would be good for a first-time dog owner. For more information, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

We got tired of Lindy and Tahoe always getting the credit for Blue Dog donations, so we broke in to Dad's PayPal account and decided to sponsor a dog.  In exchange for our cunning, you must promise to not let our dads adopt another dog! Love, Maya, Wilbur, Coco and Lilly (the cats).

Puppies, Puppies, everywhere!  Blue Dog is in need of quality puppy food for all these new puppies.  We try our best to keep these little ones on high quality food, especially since we know many of them haven't had the best start in life.

Blue Dog can take puppy food donations at any of our adoption events.  Thanks so much for your support.

Bennie

Brand new to Blue Dog, we are still getting to know Bennie. He’s an approximately 1 year old German Shepherd mix about 50 pounds. From the looks of his long nose and squatty body, he may have some Dachshund or Irish Setter way back in his bloodlines. But, no matter what he is, it shows in his demeanor how happy he is to be out of the shelter and in a home where he gets to sleep on blankets all night long. He’s done great with crate training and will gladly walk in there with just a little treat incentive. Bennie loves playing with toys and other dogs, but is not obnoxious about asking them to play with him. He loves getting attention, but can entertain himself with a toy if no one will give in to his playful antics. He’s been a very good boy in the time he’s been with Blue Dog. He would love an active family and would probably really enjoy having another dog to
play with. Bennie does have Sarcoptic Mange so could use your help in paying for his treatment which he has already started and is happily on the road to recovery!  If you have any questions about Bennie, please email his foster mom: Kristin@bluedogrescue.com.

Please consider donating via PayPal to help cover Bennie's care.

Thanks, Amanda, for helping Bennie.
With love from Bee Bee.
Best wishes from Rod.

Lula

My name is Lula. I'm a little female Shepherd mix with a pretty black mask, about four months old as of 5/1 and twelve pounds. I love toys and cuddling on a lap and am truly a social butterfly. My brother and sisters have all been adopted and now there’s just me! I was the smallest one of the bunch, so now I am enjoying getting all the attention in my foster home. My very favorite activities are helping with the gardening. I'm fat and healthy, have completed my puppy vaccinations, have been dewormed and microchipped and even spayed too! No small children, please, as I have sharp puppy teeth and nails. The vet estimates I should be about 25 pounds as an adult. Housetraining is going well because I am very smart. My very best buddy is the cat here. I like him a lot, but sometimes he tells me I am a pest. For more information, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Seamus

Everyone who meets Seamus has just one thing to say: "What a nice dog!!"

He's very low-key in public, walks well on a leash, is polite greeting strangers, and is the perfect coffee house/patio dog. But his eyes are usually on whatever is on your hands (be it a tennis ball or a cell phone), watching and waiting for the next throw. Seamus adores playing "fetch" and will drop his ball or toy neatly back at your feet, then take off for the next toss, eyes on the ball, in that infamous Border Collie crouch. We first spotted this sweet boy at Town Lake Animal Center, where he had been picked up as a stray. The days passed, nobody came for him, and a Blue Dog volunteer noticed him, dejected but dignified, curled up in the corner of his kennel. His eyes lit up when he saw the ball, and we worked hard to find a foster space for him. In his foster home, Seamus continues to have wonderful manners. The first day, he started to lift his leg once in the house, was horrified to be told "NO!" sharply, and hasn't ever done it again. He knows "sit", "down", and will wait at a doorway until he is "freed".

He's fairly tolerant of the cats in his foster home, although (typical BC), he isn't thrilled when they get in his space and will sometimes make an ugly face at them. He currently lives with five dogs of various ages and sizes and has done fine, although he is a bit aloof with other dogs. He also likes playing with the water that sprays from the hose! We suspect Seamus is going to bond very strongly to his forever person; he will follow his foster mom quietly from room to room and sleeps right next to her bed at night. Seamus is recovering from an allergic reaction caused by fleas, so his forever home will need to be diligent about flea prevention. He also has very mild hip dysplasia in one hip. Rarely (usually after a long walk, or a particularly acrobatic catch!) he will limp for a step or two. The vet feels that he does not need surgery and the best course is to ensure moderate exercise and keep him on a glucosamine supplement and occasional pain relief if needed. It doesn't stop him from being able to leap or dive to catch his ball, hop up into the truck or climb steps, and, mild dysplasia or no, his hip far outlasts his foster mom's throwing arm! He's definitely on the sensitive side and is very intelligent. Seamus is a male 45 pound Border Collie, about 5 years old. He's neutered, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. For more information on Seamus, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Wisdom

Are you stressed, over-worked and in need a of mental massage? Well look no further, as Wisdom, is the answer to all your ailments. When he sits next to you, and you gently stroke his head, all of your worries fade away. When you look into his big, brown eyes you can see he still has years of wisdom, left to share with you. He is an oasis of peace, love and devotion.

Wisdom is a 9 year old, 103 pound Shepherd/Aussie mix. Yes, he's a big guy but has very nice house manners, and is completely house trained. He had a great visit with the vet and is in good shape. He loves to spend his time laying around the yard under the shade tree's, will occasionally join in for a romp with the other dogs and completely ignores the cats. If you are looking for a well trained, loving, new dog please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

In memory of Brandy and all the other sweet older dogs looking for a forever home that realizes puppies don't have a monopoly on wonderful.

Victor

One of the saddest things we see in rescue is when a senior dog, who has clearly been a beloved companion, ends up dumped at the pound, terrified and confused and lonely. We think frequently it's because an owner dies or can no longer care for the dog. Perhaps that's what happened with Victor. He's about 10 years old, and weighs only four pounds. But in spite of that, this tiny guy has a lot of life to live and a lot of love to give. Sure he's missing some teeth. Sure he's got a cataract. But he's peppy and happy and full of spunk.

Victor is very sweet with people but must be in a home with no animals bigger than he is, as large dogs tend to bring out his inner Napoleon. He just needs a lap where he can enjoy his golden years with someone who loves little old men. lisamax@bluedogrescue.com.

This is a donation in remembrance of Toby.  Toby was a great dog and his dad's Scott and Scott miss him so much.
For “Max Wisdom- the best dog ever”.
Merry Christmas to Victor from Sarah O.

Kermit

Hi, Kermit here. My buddies and I were pulled out of the shelter a week ago cuz we were too young to stay there, and boy, am I glad! Now I get to play and goof off all the time, as well as getting down to the serious issue of sleep- I'm growing, and it wears me out! I am an adorable 7 week old terrier mix, the most outgoing of my litter. I am reddish brown with cute white toes, and I weigh about 4 pounds. I will probably grow up to be around 20-30 pounds. No young children for me, please, I've got sharp puppy teeth and claws! I've had my first shots and been dewormed, but I won't be ready to go for a few weeks yet. Austin area adopters only! You can email my ma at heidi@bluedogrescue.com if you wanna know more about me.

Did you know:  An unspayed female dog, her mate, and all of their puppies and their puppies' puppies, if none are ever spayed or neutered, can add up to over 12,000 dogs in 5 years!

Please - Don't litter - spay or neuter your pet.  Spread the word - encourage your friends and family to spay and neuter.

For information on low cost spay and neuter in the Austin area, visit Animal Trustees of Austin.

Hazel

Oh my goodness! I went to the Lee Mannix Dog Camp with my foster mom. I got to do all kinds of fun stuff with all these other dogs. My foster mom taught me how to run an agility course, I was a natural! I love running through the tunnels and jumping through the tire ring. We also did sit, down & stay with distractions WOW I got lots of treats in that class because I was such a good girl. I also learned how to do tracking which was great; I never knew my nose could find so many treats if I just smell around and search for them. I have so many new dog friends from camp I hope to see them again someday. Hazel is a 7 month old Labby/ Pit Bull mix and currently weighs 45 pounds. She is crate trained, house trained, spayed, up to date on her vaccinations and is on flea/heartworm prevention too. If you’re interested in this sweet girl please email paula@bluedogrescue.com.

In memory of Thug, from Randy and Blue Dog Lucy.

Danica

This photo caught me at a pit stop, but much of the time I am zip, zip, zipping around! I was named after another petite brunette with a need for speed. I may weigh just eleven pounds, but I am chock full of personality and pizzazz. When I am finished making sure everything is in its proper place in the backyard, I love to curl up in a teeny-tiny ball and snuggle with my foster mom. It’s hard work on the racing circuit, after all. Although I definitely am bouncy and energetic, my foster mom tells me that my "joie de vivre" and enthusiasm makes her smile! Big dogs can intimidate me a little, but it doesn't take me long to settle in and start trying to play. The cat in my foster home has provoked me to achieve some of my very best land speed records, so I would do best in a cat-free home or one with an assertive, dog savvy feline. I’m used to being crated during the day and going for a long walk after my foster mom gets home from work. Oh, and I would prefer to sleep curled up with my people on the bed, please. (My celebrity status should be good for some perks.) I was found speeding down a busy road in South Austin and was picked up by a nice police officer. I was a little shy at the shelter so Blue Dog took me in. So far, I haven’t had any accidents in the house (have to learn to hold it on the track, don't ya know) and I don't seem to get into much mischief in terms of chewing. I’m a female Chihuahua mix, about a year old, spayed, microchipped, heartworm negative and on flea/heartworm prevention, and up to date on my vaccinations. For more information, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

In honor of Lynn Kindler's 50th birthday.

Larkin

Larkin's family dumped him off at the shelter a few weeks ago. His hair was matted, full of burrs and filth. He was groomed, bathed and everyone was shocked that there was a cute Poodle under all that mess. You can tell that Larkin loves his new DO as he struts around and wags his tail all the time. Larkin's former family never let him come indoors so he is really enjoying playing inside and sleeping in a warm, soft bed at night.

Larkin is a 2 year old 18 pound (his pictures make him look a lot bigger) Poodle. His check up with the vet was great; he is now neutered, can sit on command, and we are working on his house training. He loves to play with dogs, has been very respectful of the cat, and kids ages 8 and up will work best for him. If you're interested in a sweet new family member please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

Shortstop

Spring training is under way and Shortstop is ready, willing and able to PLAY BALL! He loves to chase the ball and is learning to bring it back, although he does like you to chase him a bit, for the fun of it. Don't let those short legs fool you, he can run and keep up with all his dog buddies when they play. He is a team player and would like to join yours.

Shortstop is a 1 year old, 39 pound Basset/Retriever mix. He is in perfect health, house trained, crate trained and comes with a lifetime guarantee of love and devotion. He does require a home without cats. If you are looking for a new team member please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

Possum

Possum is a nature girl, she loves to go hiking and explore. Possum's other love is her doggie friends. She showers them with kisses. Possum gets that not all dogs like her right away so she will send them air kisses for now. Possum loves to snuggle with her Human friends at home on the couch. Possum is just over a year old and weighs 40 pounds. We are not sure what type of breed Possum is, maybe a little bit of lots of breeds. One thing for sure, she is sweet and very good natured. Possum is crate trained, house trained, spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. If you would like to meet Possum, email kathy@bluedogrescue.com.

For Possum - may you find a loving home! Aaron and Bianca

Francis

Imagine letting your dog out on the side of the highway. What do you think she would do? Do you think she would be able to find water? Would she be able to use her wits & nose to find enough to eat? Would she stay out of the road? Well, that is what Francis did. She lived on the side of Highway 183 between Loyola & Manor for at least 2 years. She was all alone and was smart enough and obviously lucky enough to survive. Amazing huh? Francis, named after her guardian angel St. Francis, is what we like to call an American Brown Dog, which means it is hard to tell her lineage. We think she might be a Lab/Beagle mix. She weighs about 40 pounds and is approximately 4 years old. Since rescuing her, she has amazed us every single day. This stoic girl likes to be petted and loves a good scratching. She is great on lead and she is learning how to play. Francis does have a few health issues that need to be addressed. She has a limp and will need x-rays and surgery on one leg. She is heartworm positive and needs treatment. And she needs to be spayed and needs her teeth cleaned. She is scheduled for surgery next week. Francis is an exceptional dog, who deserves to live a life of comfort and a loving person/family to care for her. In her foster mom's opinion, whoever adopts this exceptional girl will be very lucky. For more info contact suzy@bluedogrescue.com.

Burrito Bob

Hey, You looking at me? Well right back at you. I want to be your new best friend. I want you to play with me, take me for walks and scratch me behind my ears. It's my favorite spot! I keep watching all the fluffy, little puppies get adopted and go to new homes. While here I sit week after week waiting for you. What's the deal? What are you waiting for? I'm ready to start my life with you.

I am a 5 month old, 31 pound Pit Bull/Basset Mix. I'm a really smart puppy as I'm working hard on my house training and I almost have it down. I'm also crate trained, healthy, micro chipped and walk great on a leash. I love to play with any size dog and cats are okay too. Please send a e-mail to lisa@bluedogrescue.com so you can meet me.

Glad you're safe and warm now, BB. - Kathleen
Thanks to Tina for helping the Burrito.

Hollie

This sweet girl is looking for a home because her mom & dad got a divorce. Hollie was originally found on the side of road the day after Christmas when she was 6 months old. She was a happy, friendly dog then and she still is now. Hollie is a 5 year old, Border Collie mix. She weighs 50 pounds. Hollie is a fairly high energy, which would make her the perfect partner for a walker, hiker or runner. Hollie loves to give kisses and her favorite spot is on the couch with her person. She is spayed, current on her vaccinations and heartworm negative. Hollie was surrendered with her friend Arliss, who is with another rescue group. You can see him on the Blue Dog referral page. For more info contact suzy@bluedogrescue.com.

Buddy Boy

Buddy Boy is a sweet, 70 pound, one-year-old Black Mouth Cur mix. We originally thought he was a Lab/possibly Great Dane or Mastiff mix, until an interested web browser suggested that he might be a BMC, which we had never heard of. After looking up that breed, sure enough, he fits the description in looks and personality. He was found running along a highway in the Austin area. Buddy Boy is a good natured, sensitive, rather mellow fellow who will steal your heart. However, he can also be rambunctious and playful. He loves other dogs and is respectful of those that are not interested in playing. After just a few short weeks, he is now crate trained, appears to be house trained, and will sit for his dinner and/or treats. We are currently working on the place command, in the house and recall training, which is going well. Buddy Boy would love to settle into a forever home and be someone’s faithful companion who will gather all your yard ornaments into a nice pile for you. He would do best in a home with no cats and with children 10 and older. He is neutered, micro-chipped, and current on vaccinations. If you have any questions, please email me at Kathleen@bluedogrescue.com.

Guy

Guy is 65 pounds of pure silliness. When he’s content, his face has the biggest grin you’ve ever seen, and he loves to roll over for a belly rub while he paddles his legs with delight. This sweet dog has been through so much and has lots of love to give. He knows “sit” and “down”, walks well on a leash, is crate-trained, has gotten along just fine with the other dogs in his foster home (he likes the girls the best) and has excellent house manners. He’s learned that chasing the cats in his foster home is not allowed and he hasn’t had an accident in the house in months. Recently, Guy completed a Canine Good Citizen class at the Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior ( www.lmccb.com ) but he hasn’t quite passed the test yet; he was just a little too excited about meeting a strange dog! We will continue to work on passing the test the next time, and are looking for an adopter who is willing to continue with his training, since it helps him to build confidence and to be the very best Guy he can be!

Guy came from a rural shelter as a cruelty confiscation. He and several other dogs at the home had been tied up for months on chains barely long enough to allow them to turn around, with no shelter, food, or water. He was covered with scabs and literally skin and bones when he came to the shelter. While the case waited to be heard, Guy was held there. A Blue Dog foster person had seen him shortly after he came in and couldn’t get the emaciated yellow dog out of her mind. She visited him each weekend, bathed him, walked him, and let the animal control officer working the case know that Blue Dog would try to find a foster space for him if the judge was willing to release the dog rather than ordering him destroyed. Animal control staff was able to get Guy released, and we made a space for him in a Blue Dog foster home. Guy can still be a bit hesitant in busy surroundings and with strangers, but once he gets to know someone, you have a buddy for life. Shoes are his ultimate weakness. For some reason, no matter how many toys are in the room, if there’s a shoe on the floor, he will zero right in. Sashaying over in typical waggy hip-swinging pit bull fashion, he will gently pick up the shoe, peek around to be sure nobody is watching, and then carry it over to his bed. He hasn’t eaten any, but he sure does like to collect them. Toys come a close second; he likes ‘em squeaky, floppy, bouncy, squishy, you name it. He’s quite proficient at fetching tennis balls, when it’s not so hot. He’s a bit of a wilting violet in the heat and much prefers to hang out inside. Guy is a pit bull mix, about 2 1/2 years old. He’s been neutered, is heartworm negative and on prevention, is up-to-date on his vaccinations and microchipped. For more information, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Jackpot

You don't have to travel to Las Vegas to find your Jackpot. Blue Dog Rescue has one in foster care, just waiting to go home with you. Jackpot had been staying at a vets office since the holidays, as he was lost and no one ever showed up to claim him. He is in perfect health, and neutered. He is 10 months old and weighs 35 pounds. He will benefit from a obedience class, as he is very smart and treat motivated. He has already mastered sit at his foster home in just a few days. He loves to play and tug toys with other dogs but does require a home without cats. If you are interested in winning a Jackpot of a dog please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

3-10-08 I'm off to training where I will be learning basic obedience, try out the agility course and be ready for a new home in about 12 weeks. Please e-mail my foster family as they can arrange a time for you to visit me at school so I can show off everything I have learned.

3-29-08 A note from Jackpot's trainer: This week was a big week for Jackpot. He began to learn agility and loves it. His specialty so far is jumping. He not only clears the jumps but goes for style points by hanging in the air or going over then sideways. we will be continuing agility this week and we both are looking forward to it. We also had our first test together this Friday. We had do sit for one minute, lay down for three minutes, stay on his place bed for five minuets, heel, sit at the door until told to go, and come to me when called. Jackpot was perfect in all but the heeling, he decided he had an itch halfway through which provided for some laughs from other students and some instructors. Once he got the itch out of the way he heeled good again.

In memory of my rescue girl, Blue, 1990-2007 - Terry.

Barnum

Handsome Barnum is a friendly fellow who enjoys a good belly rub and pat on the head. He was found wandering the streets. and no one ever called to claim him. His check up at the vet went great. and he is now neutered and micro chipped. He plays great with dogs of all sizes, and kids, but does require a cat free home. He will benefit from a basic obedience class as he pulls a bit on the leash. Barnum is a 18 month old 35 pound Aussie Mix. If you are interested in meeting him please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com

3-10-08 I'm off to training where I will be learning basic obedience, try out the agility course and be ready for a new home in about 12 weeks. Please e-mail my foster family as they can arrange a time for you to visit me at school so I can show off everything I have learned.

3-30-2008 A note from Barnum's trainer: Barnum had an important test this week to demonstrate to the Instructors, what he has learned so far. He did such a good job that I made him boiled chicken breast for dinner!!!! During the test we were surrounded by all the other dogs, as they were also being tested at the same time. He had to go to his bed as instructed, and stay on it for five minutes. It was a piece of cake. He then had to sit for 1 minute. Halfway through, he did lie down for a nap, but since he didn't go anywhere, he didn't lose many points, and I said it was okay since this is something he usually does very well. I was a little nervous that he wouldn't lie down for the required 3 minutes and stay at the end of the 6' leash, since he has a habit of crawling to me and putting a paw on my foot. I asked him to PLEASE be a good boy and lie down and stay in position and he did. He also had to sit at the door without bolting through it and wait until he was told to move. This is one of his favorites since it is so easy. The last thing we had to do was come when called. Guess what. The instructor told me that our recall was the BEST out of all the dogs in the test!

Bu

Now just a minute. Stop laughing. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and Bu's foster Mom thinks she's stunning. Sure you can adopt a fluffy golden retriever, but will that stop people on the street who ask what kind of dog is that? No it won't. You are sure to stop traffic when walking Bu, so what are you waiting for, fill out the application.

Bu is a 5 month old, 25 pound boxer mix. She is so sweet, gives tons of kisses, plays great with all dogs and loves kids. She is sleeping through the night in her crate without any accidents and learning to walk on a leash. If you are looking for a one of a kind gal please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

3-10-08 I'm off to training where I will be learning basic obedience, try out the agility course and be ready for a new home in about 12 weeks. Please e-mail my foster family as they can arrange a time for you to visit me at school so I can show off everything I have learned.

3-29-08 A note from Bu's trainer: Bu and I embarked on a journey to prove our courage and stamina this week... it was our first Practical Test. The grades aren't out yet, but we both feel that we did our best. Bu enjoys pleasing me, and I discovered this week that Bu will do anything for a hot dog (piece). She will even go willingly into a crate in the name of hot dogs. There was a big fun event here at the facility on Saturday and Bu did wonderfully, walking in a crowd of people and dogs. She stood comfortably when kids approached her and never really showed any signs of uncertainty about her environment. I took her into my house this week, and she has relatively nice house manners. She was rather fond of the couch, but was quick to learn that it was mine and not hers. She sits almost every time I ask her to, her "down" is improving, and she is heeling almost perfectly now.

Here's hoping 2008 brings you lots of nose kisses! - Kathleen

Panther

No, she's not a big cat, but boy does she look like one. Panther has the most beautiful sleek, black coat. She runs like the wind, bounces up and down when playing with her toys and if she sees water, she's jumping in for a swim. Panther has been playing with all her foster buddies since she was rescued from a local shelter over the holidays. She loves them all, both big and small.

Panther is a 2 year old, 50 pound black lab. She is very smart, and will sit on command and is doing great with her crate and house training. She will benefit from a basic obedience class as she still pulls a bit when walking on leash. So if you are interested in a beautiful, energetic and loving girl please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

3-10-08 I'm off to training where I will be learning basic obedience, try out the agility course and be ready for a new home in about 12 weeks. Please e-mail my foster family as they can arrange a time for you to visit me at school so I can show off everything I have learned.

3-29-08 A note from Panther's trainer: Panther has made some great accomplishments this week. We worked on our heeling, right next to all the other, dog kennels, and she was nothing but focused! We kept at it with our basic commands such as sit, down, and heel and were really getting things ironed out. She tried agility with me, and really loves the tunnels. She's pretty fast when she wants to be, or when I have a treat at the other end of the tunnel.

Meredith

Meredith is short, chubby, and low to the ground. She is so cute she makes you smile each time you see her. Meredith was rescued from the shelter and has been adjusting to her new foster home just great. She has great house manners and loves to snuggle. She will need some leash training as once her nose hits the ground she is ready to go. She has been successfully treated for heart worms and is now ready for a new home.

Meredith is a 2 year old, 27 pound Beagle. She is house trained, crate trained, micro chipped and gets along great with dogs and kids. She does like to sniff out cats and chase squirrels . If you are interested in meeting Meredith please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

Twyla

Me: Gorgeous red-haired Basenji mix, 45 pounds, loves to cuddle.

You: Able to be patient with a dog that is a little shy at first (I wag my tail lots and lots but can play hard to get when I first meet new people). Looking for someone who will appreciate my excellent manners, and have good treats!
I like to follow my people around the yard when we are outside, and snooze inside on the couch when there’s not much going on. I would do best in a household with a routine since that makes me feel more secure. I have the doggy social rules down pat and I haven't had a single accident in the house. Belly rubs are awesome, and I like car rides, too. I lived behind a restaurant for my whole life (about 1.5 years) and am just starting to get used to seeing new things and meeting new people. We went to visit some friends and then went for a walk downtown last week. I was a little uncertain but my foster mom told me I was very brave! I walk perfectly on a leash, and my tail wags all the time! I’m spayed, have had my vaccinations, and am on flea/heartworm prevention too. For more information, email my foster mom at jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Merry Christmas to Twyla, Jenny, and Blue Dog Rescue. From two very happy couch loving mutts, Lindy and Tahoe.

Jack

This is the story of a boy who loves life. A boy like most young boys, who likes to run and play. Although he is not your typical kid, he has a lot in common with his human counterparts. This is Jack, a 1.5 year old, purebred Peeler (Pit Bull/Heeler). Jack is smart and funny and is very popular. Right now he is busy trying to figure out what electives to sign up for in Middle School. He has narrowed it down to playing on the football team, joining the wrestling team or taking up the drums in the band. Jack is at the age when he still likes playing with the younger pups and doesn't mind letting his buddies see his mommy kiss him. He might be a little embarrassed though if the other boys knew he likes to sleep with his head on mommy's lap.

Jack is impressionable, and he needs someone to keep him focused and direct all of that canine brainpower. Jack would benefit from a good role model. He would love to have an adult take him to a training class and would probably excel at agility or frisbee. Jack is just the boy to be a part of your "get-in-shape" New Year's resolution. He would be an ideal running partner. Maybe you can help get him ready for the
cross country team! Jack weighs 50 pounds; he is neutered, heartworm negative and is current on vaccinations. Contact Missy for more info at missy@bluedogrescue.com.

Todd and Teresa sponsor Jack in memory of Joe Fettig with deepest sympathies to Megan.

Weidman

Weidman is a very special guy that is looking for a very special home. His foster mom found him next to her gate one evening after he had been hit by a car. He had no sustaining injuries except for a broken tail that needed to be amputated and now leaves him with a cute little stub. He is very affectionate with people and would love to be a lap dog, besides the fact that he weighs about 65 pounds.

Weidman would do best in a low to medium energy household that is active outside the home with daily walks or runs and a family that has the time and dedication to continue his training. Weidman loves spending one-on-one time with his foster mom and working on his skills: “sit”, “down”, “with me” (a controlled leash walk) and “place” (staying on his dog bed until he is “freed” – we’re still working on this one). Weidman needs direction and guidelines in his life and thrives when he is sure of what to do. He doesn’t like making the decisions for himself. He does love going for car rides and is always ready for a good game of catch which can be simple rewards after a training session.

Weidman needs to be in a home without cats and he would be happy to be an only dog, though he could share his space with another dog that would be a good role model for him. Weidman is an Australian Shepherd/Heeler mix who is approximately 3 years old. He is house and crate trained, current on vaccinations, current on flea and heartworm preventative, microchipped, and neutered.

If you would like more information about Weidman, please contact kristin@bluedogrescue.com.

Binks and Stella (former Blue Dog Vespa) wish Weidman a "forever family".
To goofy Weidman!  Here's wishing you a love-filled life forever and ever! xoxo Cole and Lisa

Thomas Pinkerton

Meet Thomas Pinkerton, a 9-month-old pit bull mix puppy saved by the kindness of strangers. He was found with his brother, abandoned on a Buda highway on a 104-degree July day. He was suffering from mange and malnutrition; his paws were swollen from the scorching concrete. The woman, who stopped to pick the brothers up, reports an 18-wheeler almost ran them over. These sweet boys were close to death from dehydration and starvation and the effects of demodectic mange. They had hardly any hair, they were covered in sores and their skin was just hanging over their bones.

Thomas and Patrick are completely different dogs now. They have blossomed into sweet, happy puppies. Patrick was recently adopted. Now it's Thomas' turn!

Thomas is a big, affectionate teddy bear. He loves other dogs. He is likes to play and likes to lay on the couch. He would love to be someone's lap dog. Thomas will probably weigh between 60-70 pounds when he is full-grown. Thomas is neutered, current on vaccinations and is on heartworm preventative. Contact missy for more information - missy@bluedogrescue.com.

Merry Christmas to Suzanne from Careen
To the Pinkertons from Monkey...who knows what it feels like to take the yucky tasting mange treatment!

Angela Lansbury

That's right, Angela Lansbury, three-time Academy Award-nominated, Emmy-nominated, four-time Tony-winning and six-time Golden Globe-winning actress.  And now, I am ready for my next role as your best friend.  I love to hang out and watch re-runs of Murder She Wrote or any other good television dramas.  And I really love that crossover episode of Magnum p.i.  where I appeared as novelist J.B. Fletcher and got to hang out with that hunky Tom Selleck.  Oh, but back to me.  I'm an easy going gal at about 6 or 7 years old and maybe 12 pounds.  If you are looking for a girl like me to hang with, just email laura@bluedogrescue.com or click on my picture and go ahead and fill out an application.

Here's to Angela, who at first glance, reminds me of my precious Miss Daisy, celebrating her 8th year in heaven.  Until we meet again, Miss D, may God hold you in the palm of His hands.

Penney Lane

My name is Penney Lane. My sister Red and I were hanging out at the shelter before we were rescued. Thank goodness for my new foster mom. I couldn’t handle that place anymore. I’m a bit of a diva and like things my own way.  Like the other day my blanket was in my crate but I wanted to sleep in the middle of the room, so I dragged it to exactly where I wanted it and took a nap! I love naps, but I love to play even more! I’m not picky what I play with. I like toys, leaves, shoes and even fingers and toes, so I probably shouldn’t play with small kids. Although I have to maintain my diva status, I’m almost completely potty trained and am letting my foster mom teach me a few tricks. I’m about 8-9 weeks old and 9 pounds, but I’m hoping to be 50 pounds when I grow up to be the shepherd mix everyone keeps telling me I am. For more information contact valerie@bluedogrescue.com.

Hattie

Petite Hattie was living all on her own as a stray out by Decker Lake. Eventually, she was picked up by TLAC, but she was too shy to make it to adoptions. However, once in a foster home, this delicate, long-legged little girl has just blossomed, and we are so glad we gave her a chance! She's thirty pounds, about a year old, and is covered in adorable blue and red freckles. She's very eager to please, quick to learn, and definitely wants to be close to her people. Hattie was a bit intimidated by other dogs at first, but has quickly figured out they are friendly here and there's nothing to worry about. With her funny half mask, she looks like a Heeler mix from one side, and a Rat Terrier from the other! So far, there's been nary an accident in her foster home, and her house manners are quite good (although she does like to sneak up on the couch). She will definitely need some confidence building and lots of outings to new places to get her accustomed to being comfortable in new environments. Hattie has been spayed and microchipped, is current on vaccinations and flea prevention. For more information, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Hattie, you are so pretty. I hope you find the perfect forever home and that you get lots of love in your life. Brandie

Bodie

Have you ever collected anything? I have a toy collection that I am very proud of. It’s located on my blankie where I sleep next to the people bed. (I would prefer to sleep IN the people bed, but I like to burrow down into the pillows and sleep with my nose in your ear, and the humans tell me they find that is not conducive to a good night’s sleep. For whom, I ask...) Anyway, back to my super duper toy collection. I don’t even mind sharing with you if you want to play with them too!

I ended up at the shelter after I had been left stuffed in a box in a church parking lot after a very cold night. They tell me I got passed over at the shelter because I might have some pit bull in the mix, and I wasn't in very good shape. But my foster mom saw something special in my soft eyes and gently wagging tail, and here I am! When I grow up, I want to be in one of those "got milk?" advertisements. As you can see, I have a very charming milk mustache, and my little toes have been dipped in sugar, too. Right now, I weigh twenty pounds at 6 months old, so best guess is that I will be around 35 pounds when I am all grown up. My bow legs don't bother me at all (the vet says they should get better over time with good nutrition, and my x-rays revealed nothing to be worried about). I am a happy, social boy. I'm almost done with my puppy vaccinations, have been microchipped, and neutered. I am a pro at housetraining and know “sit” too! I adore the big dogs in my foster home and have tons of fun with my girlfriend Tula when she comes to visit. I’ve even learned that the cat here will play with me if I am gentle, so I try to accommodate his style! For more information, email my foster mom at jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Hannah Montana

Like my namesake, I am a bit of a diva! I am a beautiful 7 week old pure white poodle mix, with soft white wavy hair. I like to wrestle and play with my siblings, but I also will sneak off to the side for a snooze by myself! I know I'm quite pretty, but I'm also pretty spunky. I weigh about 3 and a half pounds. I'll grow up to be around 20-30 pounds. No young children for me, please, I've got sharp puppy teeth and claws! I've had my first shots and been dewormed, but I won't be ready to go for a few weeks yet. Austin area adopters only! You can email my ma at heidi@bluedogrescue.com if you wanna know more about me.

Myrtle

So, I'm the runt of my litter, at about 3.5 pounds. But, I don't let that stop me! When I first got to my foster parents house, the other pups kinda beat up on me. However, since I've been there, my terrier spunky side has come out, and now I hold my own with my siblings. I am adventurous and I like to check things out. No young children for me, please, I've got sharp puppy teeth and claws! I am a super-cute 7 week old border terrier mix, and will probably grow up to be around 20-30 pounds. I've had my first shots and been dewormed, but I won't be ready to go for a few weeks yet. Austin area adopters only! You can email my ma at heidi@bluedogrescue.com if you wanna know more about me.

Gonzo

Well, my name is a little bit misleading- I'm not wild or crazy. I am, in fact, a snuggler. I like to snuggle my head in the crook of my foster dad's neck, or on the other puppies, and go to sleep. I look like a little baby seal when I sleep. I am a 7 week old, handsome blonde and white terrier mix, and I weigh about 4 pounds. I'll probably grow up to be around 20-30 pounds. No young children for me, please, I've got sharp puppy teeth and claws! I've had my first shots and been dewormed, but I won't be ready to go for a few weeks yet. Austin area adopters only! You can email my ma at heidi@bluedogrescue.com if you wanna know more about me.

Emmett

I'm just the epitome of good doggyness! I wouldn't dream of having an accident in the house, coexist happily with the indoor cats in my foster home, make friends quickly with other dogs, am polite out in public, have no desire to chew your stuff, am very mild-mannered and, finally, wiggle my whole rear end and my cute nubbin tail whenever someone says a kind word to me! What more could anyone ask for? But my go-with-the-flow attitude has been sorely tested recently. In April of 2000, as a pup, I was adopted from Town Lake Animal Center. My dad loved me for years, kept me on heartworm prevention and fed me well. Things were pretty good. But then he had to go into the hospital, and I was given away by his family to someone else. About a month later I was found on the streets, and from there, back at the shelter once again. When the shelter called my dad's family, they told them my dad was very sick, they didn't want me and to never call back again.

Now, 8 1/2 year old dogs don't have an easy time of things at the shelter. I've been told people like cute puppies, not mature guys like me! But I quickly became a staff favorite, and they worked very hard to get me out of there and into a foster home! I was such an easy peasy dog, they let me hang out in the office much of the time, and staff sometimes even forgot I was there. So that's my story. Yep, I'm not a spring chicken, but I'm very close to the perfect dog, and I know there is a wonderful home out there looking for a dog just like me. I like walks and car rides, but am comfy just hanging out in the house too. I'm a male Aussie mix, 60 pounds (although I should be a tad closer to 55), neutered, microchipped, current on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and on flea and heartworm prevention. To top it all off, I just got my pearly whites cleaned! For more information, email jenny@bluedogrescue.com.

Love to all the Blue Dogs from Bee Bee.

Brando and his adoption tale

Hey Everyone, Brando here, otherwise known by my new name “Clyde Blue”. Well, I wanted to let you guys know that I got adopted and life is great. These two hot chicks adopted me named Pico and Izzy. It’s weird because they’re dogs and I don’t know how they did it. Whoa, wait a minute now that I think about it, there are some humans here, too. Yeah, I was adopted by an awesome human family with two grown-ups and this hilarious kid who is always crawling around, acting like one of us. Crazy. I have two beautiful girlfriends, uh, I mean sisters, who chew on me and make me chase them and are always fighting over who is in charge of me. Man, I just roll over on my back and say “Girls, Girls, you can both tell me what to do, no big deal.” This is the life. I have a huge backyard and I go on walks to big parks where I run all over the place. I’m just so happy in my new forever home and sometimes I miss my foster parents but I think that this is where I was always supposed to be, so that’s why I spent so much time at my foster home, waiting for these guys to find me. See ya’ll at the park sometime!

Bee Bee sends her love to Brando!

The next time you see a stray dog rummaging through the garbage or sitting on the side of the road, take the time to make the phone call that may save that animal's life. We hear from well-meaning people all the time who didn't call animal control to pick up a stray because they were worried about the possibility of euthanasia. However, the hazards of living on the streets, dodging cars, starving or being injured are far greater. Not to mention, a family may be desperately searching for their companion, and the city shelter offers the best chance at a reunion. In Austin, call 311, and be prepared to offer details about the dog's location and a general description.
