Seven
This 3 year old 35 pound wonder dog was picked up at the San Marcos Animal Shelter and almost immediately became simply fantastic. She probably had an owner who used to love her very much. She is quiet and calm, hardly making a peep unless yawning or within the presence of a particularly interesting dog at the park. She sits. She stays. She shakes. She gives hugs. We're trying to teach her how to make an omelette but at the moment she doesn't use enough cheese. Seven is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She is an angel at home but she probably didn't get out much in her previous life, so she really enjoys walks, cats, and other dogs. For more information on how to adopt Seven please contact nick@bluedogrescue.com.

Bell
Bell was found with her brother, Marty, out in the country, shivering in a cardboard box. After being taken to the vet, we found out she had a large bladder stone that needed to be removed. In addition, Bell has a heart condition requiring she take medication for the rest of her life. Even though she hadn't been well cared for, Bell loves and trusts people. She's a perfect companion. Bell is a very sweet, quiet, darling little dog. She's very content laying in someone's lap. One look into Bell's eyes melts your heart. Bell is approximately 5 years old, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Bell would love to be adopted with her brother, Marty. Both Marty and Bell are good with dogs and cats. Because Bell has a heart condition, she should probably go to a quiet home. For more information on adopting Bell and Marty, please contact becca@bluedogrescue.com.

Thank you Venus for always supporting our pups.

Marty
Marty was found with his sister, Bell, out in the country, shivering in a cardboard box. Marty is a happy-go-lucky kind of dog. He always looks like he's smiling. Marty loves to hang out wherever his humans hang out. Marty is a little more rambunctious than his sister. He likes to run and jump and be silly. Marty is a very good-natured, loyal dog. At the end of the day, all Marty wants to do is relax and be loved. Marty is approximately 5 years old, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Marty would love to be adopted with his sister, Bell. Both Marty and Bell are good with dogs and cats. Because Bell has a heart condition, she should probably go to a quiet home. For more information on adopting Marty and Bell, please contact becca@bluedogrescue.com. |

Squishy
Squishy is a neutered male, probably a Staffordshire/Pit Bull terrier
mix who is about a year and a half old and weighs about 40 pounds. He
hasn’t lost his puppy playfulness, though, and likes equally well to
run and play outside with my two dogs and to snuggle on the couch. He
gets along well with my two dogs and also with my three cats, in which
he is greatly interested but for the most part very respectful of.
Squishy is fully crate-trained and housebroken, and his only real vice
is stealing toys from my dogs, which sometimes gets him into trouble.
He is completely deaf, but he picks up non-verbal cues quickly, such
as when I turn the rear porch light on and off a couple of times to
signal him to come in when he’s in the back yard at night. Using
non-verbal signs has allowed me to teach him to sit, as well as to
stop whatever it is he’s doing that I don't approve of, and I’m sure
that with more training he could pick up any kind of behavior that was
desired of him. He loves people and is very motivated to please.
So, if you are somewhat dog savvy and looking for a dog who will
become very tightly bonded to you, a dog who will be up next to you on
the couch whenever you want him to be (and probably sometimes when you
would really rather he wasn't), and you don't have any children under
the age of about 8, give Squishy a thought! You'll be glad you did. Email spencer@bluedogrescue.com if you have any specific questions about Squishy.

Sending squishy hugs to Squishy! Love, Mark and Lisa
Squishy says "Thanks, Gail!"
Thanks to Janet in Dale for their donation in honor of
Blueberry (former Blue Dog) and her new family
When I was available, an alum deaf Blue Dog sponsored me, so
I'm passing it forward. Learn your hand signs - it makes the humans
happy and you get treats and tummy rubs! - Love from Sugar / Lizzy

Kona
Kona is the most cool of the puppies. She can wait or she can stay on your lap; she just wants to be near. Never over-anxious for attention, she is pure warmth and affection, a real lap puppy. She will be about 50-60 pounds full grown. Kona is 8 months old, she is a master sitter. She is up to date on her vacinations, house trained and crate trained. For more information on Kona, please email kathy@bluedogrescue.com. |

Heinz
My name is Heinz and I'm a junior adventurer. Yes, it's true, at only about three months old I was found circumnavigating the streets of Austin. Then I stayed for a while in a kind of creepy hotel for dogs where they fed me every day, but it was cold and not so much fun. Now I am having loads of adventures in the back yard of my foster home. I get to play chase with the other dogs and search the sky for birds and send squirrels up trees. And toys, I love all the toys! It's so much fun to see what's next. And then when I'm all tuckered out from my adventures, I get to curl up with my head on my foster mom's shoulder.
Heinz is a 3 month old, 15 pound Corgi/terrier/chihuahua kind of mixed up mix. He should be about 40 pounds full grown and is long and low to the ground. He is up to date on his shots and will be neutered the week of 1/25. He is crate trained, knows sit and is working very, very hard on his house training. He has learned the rules of the house quickly. With his sharp puppy teeth, though, he will do best in a house with older children. To join this curious little guy on the adventure of his life, email pat@bluedogrescue.com |

Newman
This is the story of a very special dog named Newman, after the late Paul Newman, because his foster parents think he is one handsome little man. In his short life of only 3 months, Newman has experienced acts of cruelty and neglect that he’s lucky to have actually survived from. During the recent cold front in Austin when temperatures reached down into the teens, Newman was put into a trash bag and left in a dumpster for TWO days. He has the worst case of sarcoptic mange his fosters have ever seen, which left him with only about 10% of his fur, bleeding open sores and a nasty skin infection. In addition to the lack of veterinary care that could have prevented this, his level of malnutrition and most likely being kept in a confined space too small for him has left his legs deformed. His back legs do not fully extend, his front legs are bowed and his wrists turn outward. The bottoms of his paws haven’t formed pads yet, probably because he was not given the opportunity to walk very often, if at all. Although it takes a lot of effort and energy for him to walk, he tries his best and gets better and stronger every day.
Newman is now safe and warm in a loving foster home and receiving all of the veterinary care he so desperately needs. Despite all of the cruelty humans have showed him in the past, he is anxious to shower people with kisses and wag his tail at every opportunity. He’s putting his terrible past behind him and looking forward to his future with a forever family that will only show him the love, kindness and devotion that he gives unconditionally. Due to his condition it is uncertain as to what breed he is, but the best guess at this time is a Border Collie mix. He currently weighs 14.5 pounds but is underweight. Updates will be posted as he continues to make progress and more details about his breed, size and personality become evident. He will be neutered and available for adoption once his health has improved and he’s cleared by the vet. Contributions toward his medical expenses as well as donations such as high-quality puppy food, treats and toys would be greatly appreciated. For more information please email cheri@bluedogrescue.com

Reid
All of Reid's brothers and his sister have been adopted. He is wondering why a cute puppy like himself is still waiting for a family to call his own. Reid can be a little shy when he first meets you but warms up quickly. He loves to share puppy kisses and hugs.
Reid is a five month old, twelve pound Terrier mix. He is working hard on his house training, is crate trained, learning to walk on a leash and healthy. Please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com to set up a time to meet Reid. |

Julie is a rascal and always ready for a adventure. She loves dogs of all sizes, toys that squeak, running after the ball, and if you know a game, she's ready to play. Julie is a six month old, eleven pound Terrier mix. She is working hard on her house training, is crate trained, walks pretty well on a leash and is learning to sit for a treat. She is really smart and has completely won the hearts of her foster family in just a couple of weeks. Snowy
Two great things happened on December 4, 2009 in Austin. It snowed that day and Snowy a little, sick Chihuahua was rescued from the shelter. Snowy was in really bad shape. She had a severe case of demodex mange as well as a yeast infection. Her hair was gone, she was bright red, her little legs were swollen, she was bleeding from sores and in horrible pain. It has now been a little over a month and what an improvement she has made. All it took was antibiotics, skin supplements, weekly baths and lots of TLC. Snowy is making a wonderful recovery and her hair is coming in nicely.
Snowy is a seven month old, six pound Chihuahua. She is a snuggle bug and loves to play with dogs and toys her size. She still has several more weeks of treatment and will see the vet again in early February for a skin scrape. We are hopeful that she will be ready for a new home in March. Please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com for more information on Snowy.

Duff
Duff likes to stalk his toys. He hides in the grass or around the corner from them and then when they least expect it, he pounces and wrestles them to the ground. He always wins and struts around like a grand champ. Duff is full of personality and there is never a dull moment when he is around.
Duff is a two year old, fifteen pound Min Pin mix. He is house trained, crate trained and ready for a new home. Duff will benefit from a basic obedience class to work on his leash training. If you are interested in meeting Duff please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

Thanks to Blue Dog Rescue for all you do for the dogs - Linda.

Avigail
When Avigail was rescued off the streets, she was in horrible shape. She was in heat, had infections in both ears, a yeast infection, her coat was matted and she smelled like she had never had a bath. While she was being spayed the staff began to shear her coat off of her. Underneath layers upon layers on matted hair they found a raging skin infection. The poor girl must have suffered for a long time. When it was all over and we are not kidding she weighed a pound less. It has taken several weeks to get her healthy again but she is looking and feeling so much better.
Avigail is a seven year old, sixteen pound Poodle mix. She is completely house trained, walks great on a leash, loves to go for rides in the car and gets along with dogs and cats. If you are looking to give a dog a long and happy new life please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.

Lil' Prancer
When I'm not helping Santa deliver presents to good little boys and girls I'm busy pretending to be a cute little puppy! That's right, I'm a reindeer trapped in a puppy's body. Okay, okay, I'm not really a reindeer but I hope to be when I grow up. My favorite things are to cuddle, prance, cuddle, fetch, cuddle, play tug, cuddle, play with other dogs, and well, you get the idea! I would love to find a forever home with a family that would take me on walks, to puppy classes and... you guessed it... cuddle! I'm a bit of a "velcro" dog, which means I need a family that is willing to spend a lot of time with me, and having another doggie to keep me company would be a plus.
I do well with children, but would do best in a household with children over 5 due to my sharp puppy teeth and nails. I like the company of kitty companions, and although I have an initial puppy curiosity about them, I've learned to leave them alone when they don't want to play with me. I'm fully vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and on heartworm and flea prevention. I'm currently an 8.5 month old, 35 pound spayed "American Brown Dog." (That means no one is quite sure what breed I am), although there is probably some Shepherd and Pit Bull thrown in there. All I know is that I'm 100% cuteness! The vet thinks I should be about 40-45 pounds when I'm full grown. For more information please email my foster mom at cheri@bluedogrescue.com.

Lurch
Big, handsome and loving is the best way to describe Lurch. He was found wandering the streets of Austin? How could someone not be frantically looking for this big guy? Well a trip to the vet and Blue Dog Rescue found out why he was put out on the streets. Lurch suffers from Osteochondrosis Dissecans of the shoulder and requires an expensive surgery for him to live a full and pain free life. We are asking for donations to help cover the cost as Lurch deserves better than to be thrown out with the trash.
Lurch is a one year old, one hundred and fifteen pound St. Bernard. He has great house manners if you don't mind slobber. He loves his foster family and is very grateful for the huge dog bed he rests in each night. For more information on Lurch please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com.
Lurch had his surgery on 12/17, is back home and is doing well. He will start water/treadmill therapy in a couple of weeks which should be a hoot to watch. He sends BIG slobbery kisses to everyone who has donated and sent him get well wishes.
Lurch has completed is physical therapy and is running and playing pain free! He is ready for a new home and is anxious to meet you.

Mikey
Mikey is a one year old Great Dane / Lab mix. At 75 lbs, he’s long, lean, and as handsome as they come. Mikey had a pretty rough start as a puppy. He has now had surgery on both elbows to correct severe dysplasia. His progress since the procedures has been remarkable and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped make this life-changing care possible. These days, Mikey’s favorite things are fetching sticks in the water, running as fast as he possibly can, and (if he gets excited enough) jumping straight up and down like he’s on a pogo stick. He loves to play with his foster siblings and go on long walks with his pack. Mikey can be a pretty shy guy when it comes to new humans, but once you earn his trust, you’ll find that he is bursting with energy, silliness, and affection.
Mikey is looking for a very special place to be his forever home. He needs a home where he can get a lot of attention and plenty of play time. Because of his past structural problems, it’s important for Mikey’s new person to strike a balance between keeping Mikey fit (he needs to stay lean and agile to help prevent further injury) and not over-doing it. And, because of Mikey’s shyness, he would also like his new home to have at least one other dog with whom he can go on regular outings to explore the outside world. For more information on Mikey, email kathy@bluedogrescue.com.

Omyrah
Miss Omyrah has had it fairly rough and is waiting for someone to provide her the loving family she never knew she would have. Omyrah was an owner surrender at a local shelter along with her pregnant sister (Sassafras). Although we don't know exactly what conditions she lived in, she was left at the shelter with a deformed front leg (from an old injury that was never taken care of) and an embedded collar due to her previous owners not taking off her old collar that was too small. While the shelter was able to surgically remove the collar, the leg left her slim to no chance of being adopted from the shelter. That's when she was rescued by a Blue Dog volunteer and taken to the vet. It was decided that the best thing to do would be to amputate the leg completely as it was causing Omyrah some pain. Omyrah is proof that a dog doesn't hold a grudge.
She runs around the house and plays with her big dog brother and sister without any problem and doesn't mind her kitty friends (although the puppy in her does like to chase them friendly from time to time). She is aproximatly 11 months old and has been spayed, is heartworm negative and has had all of her shots. She is currently on medication for demodex but should be finishing that in the next 2-4 weeks. She had little to no people interaction prior to coming to Blue Dog but continues to become more more loving with us every day. She is still a puppy and training is going good but she needs to be supervised so she doesn't find a shoe to chew or a place to go potty, but is crate trained and is doing well. We are looking into puppy training to socialize her with new experiences but she will be best in a home with kids 8+ years because she is still timid when being handled. She has had a rough start but is ready for you to show her how wonderful humans ca be! Please contact her foster mom to set up a meet and greet to see what a wonderful addtiton she will be to your home. lisa@bluedogrescue.com

Did you know that an average of 25% of all dogs in U.S. shelters are purebred? If you have your heart set on a purebred dog, but don't want to contribute to pet overpopulation by buying a dog, check out www.petfinder.org. Breed-specific rescue groups are another great source--in Texas, there's one for just about every breed! |

Loue
Loue is a 1-year old ball of love and playfulness. This little gentleman is a lover, not a fighter. He's a 45 lb. black lab/pit mix. Since being taken out of Town Lake Animal Shelter where he was abandoned, Loue is learning all kinds of things. He's a very good listener and doesn't have accidents when he's left inside now and knows how to sit. He has been fixed, is heartworm negative and up to date on flea and heartworm medications. Loue's idea of a perfect day is going to the dog park and making a bunch of friends. Then coming home, curling up and getting his chest scratched. He would do best in a home with active owners or other active dogs. Please email eric@bluedogrescue.com for more info.

Thank you to Mr. Ortiz 5th grade student government class at Spicewood Elementary for holding a car wash to raise money for the dogs.
Sending love to Loue from Mark and Lisa. Monkey, our black rescue, can relate to the issue of not looking as sweet in photos because her ears are always dropped. I bet Loue is a ball of love just like her.

Frannie Would you like a best friend? I am
looking for a nice person/s to call my own. I lived on the side of
Highway 183 for years and I am now loving having a warm place to sleep
and a nice person to hang out with. I am approximately 7 years out and
I weigh 40 pounds. My foster mom thinks I am a Beagle/Lab mix. I LOVE
going places - walks (I am perfect on lead), the pet store, riding in
the car, to the park, basically anywhere with my person. I am
housebroken and crate trained, but don't really need to be, because I
am trustworthy in the house alone. I would prefer a calmish home,
small kidos are too rambunctious for me. I get along with other dogs
and cats. Boy, I have a lot of good qualities huh?! To contact my
foster mom - email

Kayla
If grey is your favorite color and you are looking for a loyal, new, best friend then look no further as Kayla is the dog for you. Kayla was picked up by animal control as a stray, and found herself at the shelter, she was depressed as she wanted to get out and play, and was very happy when she was rescued. Her little nubby tail has been wagging non stop ever since.
Kayla is an eighteen month old, sixty two pound Weimaraner. She is completely house trained, crate trained, sits on command and is learning to shake. A trip to the vet reveled that she is heart worm positive so she will be treated in early February. The vet feels she will make a full recovery and live a long and happy life. If you are interested in meeting Kayla please e-mail lisa@bluedogrescue.com. |

Alley

Alley looks like a miniature golden retriever, and has learned to do a bit of fetching just to prove it. What a smart, sweet girl she is! Alley was living with a homeless woman and another dog companion in an abandoned house. She managed to survive the feral dog pack that was competing for their food, and has shown a gentle, loving nature. When she first arrived at her foster home, she did not think she belonged inside, so we would have to pick her up to bring her in. It didn’t take long for her to realize that not only could she be warm and comfortable on her dog bed, but she could use the doggy door to go in and out any time she wanted. Alley is learning to fetch, sit and play with the other foster dogs in the house (we don’t think she has ever seen a dog toy). She is great with cats, crate trained and potty trained. One of her favorite activities is to go for a walk, and she does wonderfully on a leash. Alley is a bit shy when you meet her, but warms up as she realizes that you are going to treat her with kindness. She would be fine as either an only dog or with other dog companions, though she hasn’t figured out how to play yet. She is 37 lbs., is spayed, has had all her shots, but is heartworm positive, and will begin her treatments soon. If you are interested in more information on Alley, contact lori@bluedogrescue.com.

Rochelle sends her love to Alley in memory of Pete abd Betty's sweet Pappy.
Thanks to Paul and Fabienne for donating to the pups.

Pierre
Bonjour, les amours de chiens! C'est moi... Pierre! I am 1-2 year old 12 pound poodle mix. I'm working on my potty-training, crate-training and learning to trust new people. I do walk well on a leash... as you can see, I'm sporting a new wardrobe which is great because they had to shave nearly all of my fur off due to some nasty matting. Brrrr... it was cold for a few days, but my fur is recovering nicely. I am heartworm negative, neutered and am up-to-date on vaccinations. I prefer calmer homes with no children less than 12 years old. I'm available for adoption in only Central Texas, too, please. For more information, please email amy@bluedogrescue.com but please know that she does not speak en francais!

Thanks to Ariane for helping Blue Dog.

Noelle the Gazelle
click my pic to see my video!
Noelle has been hard at work! She's been learning how to fine tune her loose leash walking skills, sit/stay, drop and wait patiently. She's becoming quite the refined young lady after all her doggie training! When she's not working on her training skills, Noelle loves to play catch, snuggle with her foster siblings, play catch, sleep on her back and get tummy rubs, and play catch. (She likes to play catch, just watch her video!) At 50 lbs, Noelle is the perfect medium sized dog. She's got enough energy for running and hiking and is also happy lounging on her pillows and cat beds (much to her kitty sister's dismay). Noelle gets along very well with her feline siblings. Noelle likes company so she needs to be with someone who can spend lots of time with her and/or has another critter. Noelle is about 2 years-old,
up-to-date on all her vaccines, and heartworm negative. For more information on Noelle, please contact becca@bluedogrescue.com.

Chyenne
Cheyenne is a gentle natured, sweet, young girl learning how good life can be living indoors. The shelter had her listed as a lab/chow mix but she isn't interested in typical lab play, like chasing balls, or playing in the water. SHe would rather be inside, following her foster mom from room to room, or watching the cats play. Right now, she's still not sure what chew bones or squeaky toys are. She has a low to medium energy level, and seems to really enjoy being around children. Cheyenne is good on a leash, being house trained, and learning to sleep nights and some days hours in a crate. She is 4 to 5 months old, 20lbs., spayed, and should be a nice medium size as an adult. For more information on Cheyenne, contact janet@bluedogrescue.com.
11-17-09 - This beautiful girl is now 7 months old, very friendly, affectionate, and about the size of a border collie. Cheyenne might have some herding dog in her, since she will follow so close behind you sometimes her paws will touch your heels.. She is house trained, doggie door trained (the cats taught her!), well mannered inside , and adores children--elementary age kids and up would be best for her. Cheyenne is still not interested in playing fetch, but loves to run and play with other dogs. She might be too rambunctious for smaller pups. An ideal home for her would be an active family, or single person, another dog to play with, and a fenced yard. She is already spayed, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention.

The next time you see a stray dog rummaging through the garbage or
sitting on the side of the road, take the time to make the phone call
that may save that animal's life. We hear from well-meaning people all
the time who didn't call animal control to pick up a stray because
they were worried about the possibility of euthanasia. However, the
hazards of living on the streets, dodging cars, starving or being
injured are far greater. Not to mention, a family may be desperately
searching for their companion, and the city shelter offers the best
chance at a reunion. In Austin, call 311, and be prepared to offer
details about the dog's location and a general description. |
