Helen's Story
I'm Helen, an 21 month old, 45 lb
shepherd mix. A few months ago, a Blue Dog foster person found me on
the side of Highway 21. I was feeling very tired and sick. My body
was covered in sores caused by demodectic mange
and I was starving. I was just a little scared when she pulled over
to the side of the road, but I was too weak to run. I was bleeding
all over and my muscles were wasted away. That night, a wonderful vet
agreed to stay open late and I went there right away. I seemed to
make everyone who looked at me very sad and upset. I weighed 28 lbs
then. I waited in the vet's office while they talked and looked at
me. I heard them say things like "euthanasia" and "overwhelming
infection". I don't know what all that meant, but their voices were
soft and their hands were kind to me, so I just watched them and
wagged my tail while I lay on the table. I was taken home that night
to where it was warm and I got food! Lots of food! I felt very tired
for a few days and just ate and slept lots, but I was always happy to
see people. For awhile, I was eating 10 cups and 2 cans of puppy food
a day! My sores started to heal and I gained seventeen pounds!
Short, fuzzy hair is growing on my bare spots, and although I still am
not quite beautiful yet, I am well on the way to recovery and would
love to find my forever home. Hopefully there is someone out there
who can see past my temporarily patchy coat to the gorgeous girl I
will be in a few months. I get along very well with other dogs and
children too and am housetrained and crate-trained. If you would like
to meet me, email
