The referral dogs are dogs (sometimes kitties) from local area animal shelters or individuals' homes that need assistance. Check here if you don't see the dog for you in our Dogs Available section.

So you found a stray?  Click here if you've found a stray or need suggestions for an owner surrender.

To place a dog that you have found or a dog that needs to find a home on this referral site, please send a digital picture of your dog and a brief description via email to referral@bluedogrescue.com and donate safely and securely via PayPal.  We do require that all dogs on our referral page be spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, and is on heartworm preventative.  A $20 donation for listing the dog is appreciated.

The dogs listed on this page are not Blue Dogs.  The bios and descriptions are not written by Blue Dog. Please contact the individual listed in the dog's description for more information.

Blue Dog makes NO guarantee as to the health or temperament of any of the dogs on this referral page.  When adopting any dog, be informed and ask questions about the dog's health status.  Ask for verification of vaccination and heartworm preventative.  Be aware of temperament and ask questions to verify the dog will fit into your family.  To avoid potentially costly problems, be an informed adopter and ask your vet about important health and temperament issues before adopting an animal.

Consider using an Adoption Application and Adoption Agreement when inquiring about the animals on this page.  The documents are made available through PETA's Animal Angels resources.

Julia

My name is Julia. I am an intelligent, highly trainable and active dog who needs a new home. I am a pure bred Black Mouth Cur. Black Mouth Curs are bred for herding and hunting so we need lots of exercise. I am best suited for an owner who has an active life style and will spend quality time with me. I would make a great running companion and I need space to run.

I am 2 years and 9 months old, and weigh 60 lbs. I am house trained and house friendly, know my basic commands including: sit, stay and lay down. I am always happy to shake your hand for a treat! I don't mean to brag but I was the quickest learner in my puppy classes. I am also a very fast runner and I am easy on the eyes! I am spayed, have a microchip, up to date on all shots, on heartworm prevention medicine and flea control medicine. I can confidently say that I am a very healthy dog!

Although my current owner loves me dearly, I am seeking a new home because I don't get along well with the older, smaller dog in my home. Although never aggressive towards people, I am food aggressive with other dogs. I need a home where I am the only dog.

I have no doubt that I will make a good and dedicated canine companion if I am placed in the right home. If you are able to provide me a home as described above and if you are interested in learning more about me, please let me know. If you are inclined, I would love to hear about you and how you think I would fit in your home.

There is a reasonable re homing fee to insure that I go to a good home. Thanks for listening and hope to hear from you. Please contact tburns6@austin.rr.com for more information.

Mr. Chihuahua

This sweet little guy is currently at the Bastrop County Animal Shleter. He has had a tough time - someone in his life was not very nice to him. He is a little shy with new people; he seems to prefer women. Once he gets to know you he is a lover boy. He would do best in an adult home. He likes other dogs. He marks a little, but neutering him will definitely help with this. He would love to come and keep you company! BCAC is a high-kill facility that always has TONS of adoptable dogs & cats of all ages and sizes. BCAC is located at 589 Cool Water Drive off Highway 95 between Elgin and Bastrop. They are open Tuesday - Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 581-4080.

Labs Galore

This is just one of 5 purebred Labrador Retrievers currently at the Bastrop County Shelter. They are all friendly and young. They would LOVE to come be a part of your family!!! This is a high-kill facility that always has TONS of adoptable dogs & cats of all ages and sizes. BCAC is located at 589 Cool Water Drive off Highway 95 between Elgin and Bastrop. Lilly

Lilly is a 6 month old female, short hair American Eskimo mix. She presently weighs 22 lb and may grow up to 35-40 lb. She has been spayed and vaccinated, is on a heartworm and flea preventive and is house and crate trained. She is submissive with other dogs and is gentle with cats. She LOVES the water and spends her outdoor time playing in her little swimming pool. She likes to fetch and run but also enjoys quiet time on the couch. Lilly would do well in a household with children and one or more other dogs. She is naturally attached to her pack at her foster home and will need a home where she can become part of an active family. Lilly was rescued from a local animal control facility. Please contact Monika at 512-267-7658 or email for adoption information.

Julia

Julia is an intelligent, quick learning, very active and agile dog. Black Mouth Curs are bred for herding and hunting so they need lots of exercise. Julia is best suited for an owner who has an active life style. She would make a great running companion. With proper training, she could also be a good herding or hunting dog. She needs a lot of space to run. Julia is 2 years and 9 months old, and weighs 60 lbs. She is house trained and house friendly, knows basic commands including: sit, stay and lay down She is always happy to shake your hand for a treat! She was the quickest learner in her puppy classes, loves to play fetch and is a very fast runner! Julia is also spayed, has a microchip, is up to date on all shots, on heartworm prevention medicine, flea control medicine and is very healthy. I have raised Julia since puppy hood and I am very attached to her. However, after a lot of thought and effort, I have chosen to adopt her to another home because she is not compatible with my smaller, older dog. She is food aggressive and needs to ideally be in a home where she is the only dog. I have no doubt that she will make a good and dedicated canine companion if she is placed in the right environment. If you are able to provide her a home as described above and you are interested in learning more about Julia, please contact me at tburns6@austin.rr.com. I will include her crate which is where she loves to sleep and nap.

Ava

Ava was born approximately in Feb. 2005. Our veterinarian thinks that she has German Shepherd, blue Australian Cattle Dog, and Lab ancestry. She entered the Town Lake Animal Center 7/12/2005 and was adopted by our daughter as a companion for our Australian Shepherd in early August of that year. She is relatively shy without being skittish and is very sweet. She adapted quite well to her new surroundings, which besides the Aussie included a cat and us. She has no health issues. She has been spayed and chipped and is up on shots and heartworm medication. We have been feeding her Science Diet Adult Light dry food twice a day and she vacuums it up in about 30 seconds (after patiently waiting for the hand sign indicating that it OK to start eating). She is a pretty laid-back dog, but nevertheless alerts us to anyone approaching the house. She does get excited when deer walk past our fence! She loves to be petted and seems to have a preference for females although she is very trusting with me. That may be related to her experiences during the first 5 months of her life. She also liked the attention she got from our grandkids (4 and 6) when they visited. Ava likes to go on outings, she enjoys riding in the car, and taking leashed walks around Lady Bird Lake. She is not too wild about swimming and is careful to just get her belly wet when she steps into the lake to cool off and drink. Both our Aussie and cat recently died, leaving Ava alone - and a bit lonely. She had enjoyed her romps with the Aussie and sniffing the cat. We travel a lot and our daughter has moved out of the house - and Ava now no longer has the companionship and attention she needs - and deserves. Please contact Ava@balcor.com.

Mina

Lovely Mina was found pregnant (and about to burst) wandering down a street in S. Austin in April 2008. She gave birth to seven pups, was placed in a foster home where they were weaned and are in the process of being adopted. Now Mina is in a wonderful temporary home where she is recovering from spay surgery and is about to be treated for heartworms. This approximately 2 year old blue heeler has a docked tail. She is energetic, loves other dogs (especially ones her size or larger), is crate trained, learns quickly. She is sweet tempered and seems to be well socialized, liking both men and women. We hear that she is all right with cats, too. Please call Debbie Lee for more information and/or to fill out an application. (512) 458-6434

China

China is a flashy 3 year old Catahoula. She is house broke, crate trained and walks great on leash. She is great with kids of any age, and great with cats. China is deaf and will need a home that walks her on lead or lets her run in a fenced in yard. China is up on all her shots, and is spayed. China is very smart and easy to work with. Please call 512 760 6656 or email me at cadavergirl@gmail.com to find out more about her.

Mr. Thunder

Mr. Thunder Down Under is one of the sweetest big goober dogs you'll ever meet. He really just wants to be a lap dog - forgetting that he's a little on the large side of medium! Thunder has some Rottie and some lab in him probably, also some German Shepherd - along with other lovely mixes. He seems to love all the people he meets. This boy is under 2 years old - but very, very calm. He's in a foster home with a cat and another dog, so he's fine with both. and just wags when he sees her. He's learned the ropes - crate training, housebreaking, living with people (and is thriving). We just discovered that Thunder is a special needs dog. He has hip dysplasia, which means he'll need someone who will help keep him nice and thin, but also be sensitive to his somewhat painful hips. Right now doggie aspirin is keeping the pain in control. He might be a candidate for hip surgery, we're checking into that now. Please consider this special needs guy. THUNDER RAISED $450 FOR HIS HIP SURGERY AT THE RED POPPY FESTIVAL IN GEORGETOWN. HOORAY! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO FOSTER TO ADOPT - GAO AGREES TO CONTINUE COVERING MEDICAL EXPENSES FOR HIS HIPS. Contact txcodigirl@gmail.com.

Cowgirl

I'm Cow Girl. I'm a very sweet and snuggly 3 or 4 year old Kelpie/Rat terrier mix girl. I weigh just about 30 ibs and am a very low shedder. I love to play with with kids and other dogs and chase and pester "encroachers" in the back yard. I only chase cats if they run away. I'm good on a leash and am well potty trained. I've been spayed, vaccinated and am flea free. I popped up at a nice woman's home and wouldn't leave until she let me in. It might have something to do with why my right ear is chewed up, but I really don't like to talk about it. I've moved on. If you are looking for a running buddy or a cuddle baby. I'm your girl. Contact my foster momma at me_pon@hotmail.com.

Choco the Amazing Lab Mix

Hey – look how cute, ummm I mean, HANDSOME I am! This laid back chocolate lab/spaniel mix got the short end of the stick when it came to legs . Choco was found wandering the streets of South Austin, trying to play with other dogs. He was un-neutered and positive for heartworms, but will be treated soon! Choco is VERY well behaved, gets along with other dogs and people, walks well on a leash and is house trained. What he really likes is laying by your feet and getting his belly rubbed…anybody out there give really good belly rubs? He really needs to find a forever home, but a nice foster home would be good too! Choco is current on shots, neutered and being treated for heartworms.

Choco is 6 years old and weighs about 75 pounds. He is an awesome dog. For more information, email kalayajoelle@sbcglobal.net.

Emmaus and Vivi

Emmaus and Vivi were both adopted from the Town Lake Animal Center by a family with 3 daughters. Emmaus was the first to be adopted and Vivi came a year later to become Emmaus' companion. Both live outdoors 24/7. Emmaus and Vivi are very gentle dogs with a calm disposition and are eager to learn. They walk well on a leash, and are curious about other dogs and critters. Their owners wish to place them in a home where they can get the exercise and affection that the dogs deserve. Because Emmaus and Vivi have been together for over 4 years, the owners want the dogs to remain together. Please email pricegals@aol.com for more information.

Theo

Hi! This is Theo. He is around 1-1/2 to 2 years old and is a 70 lb. Catahoula mix, though some think he is full Catahoula. When found out in the country, he was almost 1/2 his current weight and was nearly starving to death. He also had a leg injury, but he had surgery and has fully recovered. He is heartworm negative and is currently on heartworm prevention and flea management treatments. All his vaccinations are current and he has been neutered and microchipped. He is a big, goofy, healthy, handsome fellow who loves everyone. He has a big soft face and ears and hardly sheds, if at all. He is a very smart boy and would do well with obedience and even agility training. We think he also might be a good candidate for search and rescue training as he seems to be naturally drawn to scent tracking. He is treat motivated and house and crate trained. He gets along with most dogs so far. He loves taking walks and, if in a large fenced-in area, loves to run. Because he is such a friendly boy, he can't be trusted off-leash yet as he will run off to visit other people and dogs who look like fun. With training that will probably change. He loves kids but would probably be better if he was in a home with older children because of his size and energy level. He would be a great family dog, though. He is cuddly and loves to nap next to his people friends. We are not sure what he will do around cats in general, but when a sick cat showed up in our yard and curled up against the house, he didn't hurt it but just barked at it. Theo is looking for his forever family. Please email me at leilac@austin.rr.com.

Lao Tse

We named him after the mythical Chinese Taoist philosopher when we got to know this dog. The name fits. He is a well-trained, sweet, smart and humble dog, who likes walks, playing fetch, and being around people. He is approximately 4 or 5 years old. (We are uncertain of the exact age. Two and one-half years ago when we found him on the street, he appeared to be about 2.) We think he is a German Shepherd-Chow mix. He is neutered and gets along well with other pets. He currently lives with two cats, and also lived with an older mixed breed dog, all without incident. He was house-trained when we found him, and has never been a problem living inside. His health at his March 2008 annual exam was excellent. He is current on all vaccinations, heart worm preventative, and is micro chipped. He was trained by Kim Kelly at Triple Crown Academy. He sits, heels, stays, and places on command, but is getting rusty because we have not worked with him as much as we should. We have two new toddlers, just do not have any free time to devote to Lao Tse and would love to find him a good home with someone who will give him the attention he deserves. It will break our hearts, but he needs a new home. To talk to me about Lao Tse, please email Drew at drewwri@yahoo.com.

Maggie and Lapu

Hello, we are Maggie (black male dog) and Lapu (brindle female dog).  We were found roaming alone in north Austin. Our foster dad could not find our owner so he sent us in for alterations, rabies shot, city of Austin registrations, and microchips. Then we found our original owner and he didn't want us back because we cannot be bred anymore. But our foster daddy is taking good care of us and we are starting to learn a lot of new things like sitting and proving to people that Pit Bulls are not vicious pets. We love to roughhouse and go for long walks and swimming. But don't forget that we are going to be big dogs. Right now we weigh about 35-40 pounds each. We both love our vegetarian diet right now and really hope to find new homes with yards so that we can run around. We would like to stay together but understand if we have to go our separate ways. Please consider taking us into your home and don't forget that our foster daddy is giving us to a good home but wants to make sure that you are going to get us our next round of shots. For information please contact our foster daddy at mikeonline@austin.rr.com.

Sammi

Sammi is a 3 year old German Shepherd lady who is looking for her forever home. She is fun, energetic, and very loyal. She needs an active family with no kids to give her the attention she deserves and let her be the best girl she can be. She loves attention and would prefer to be a lap dog, if only her size would allow. She comes with two free private lessons from the Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior and is eager to meet her new family. Please call 512-371-DOGS or email lmccb@lmccb.com for more information about this special girl.

Liza Jane

Think Tigger but in dog terms. That's Liza Jane! Constant love and attention will be showered on all of those in her new forever home, with hugs and kisses no extra charge. Liza was found emaciated and running along a major road. She was shy for the first 24 hours. Now that she knows she is in a safe place, she has given all of her love to our family. She gets along great with our kids (ages 8 and 12) and other pets (dogs and cats). Liza Jane is about 35 pounds and around a year old. She had her "spa treatment" at Emancipet 4/4 and is now spayed, vaccinated, hw negative and on flea/heartworm prevention. For more information on sweet Liza Jane, email ljackson34@earthlink.net.

Puddin'

Puddin' is a sweet young girl who loves everyone. She's very playful and full of life but can settle at your feet for "chew time" and be quite content. She is learning home manners at rocket speed. She is very quick to learn what gets her a "good girl" and some petting. Bring out the ball and she will perform acrobatics for you in traditional "Boxer Fashion". Boxer/Pit Mix (55 lb spayed female about 2 years old.) Does well with dogs, has lived successfully with one cat. Her coat is recovering from a non-contagious skin mite. Puddin' has been spayed and microchipped, is current on vaccinations. Discounted training at the Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior for the lucky adopters.  Contact missy@bluedogrescue.com for more information.

Cisco

Does your active dog need a full-time play buddy?

Cisco is a high-energy, loyal and lovable friend. He was rescued from Town Lake Animal Shelter in August 2007. We think he is almost two years old. He is neutered. Since bringing him home, he has had formal obedience training through Taurus Training of Austin. He quickly learned all of the basic commands. He heels on leash, sits, lies down, stays and is getting better everyday at "here." His personality is great. He loves being around people, snuggling with his belly up in the air, playing in water, romping with other dogs, walking, going on long runs and chewing on bones.

Cisco is seeking a loving home with owners who embrace an active lifestyle. He needs a large, secure yard. And since he loves being with other dogs, it would be ideal if he had a high-energy dog companion to play with. Also, he needs a home with NO CATS around (he chases cats).  Interested parties must be willing to provide personal references, show us his new living environment and pay a $150 adoption fee that will go towards two in-home training sessions with Cisco's trainer.  If interested, please call 512-694-8152.

Elmo

Have you been wishing you could get a dog, but think maybe you aren't home enough for one? Have you been thinking about a dog because you want a companion who would be out-going and friendly, like to be petted and to hang out with you? Well, Elmo might just be the cat for you! He's truly a dog in a cat's body, with all the great characteristics I described above. He's probably a year and a half old, at our best estimate. We found him hanging out in front of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant next to a highway out in Bastrop, begging for attention from everyone who came in or out of the door. We whisked him away before he could help create any more kittens, and before he got smooshed on the highway only a few feet away. He has been neutered and gotten his shots. Elmo has one small problem, and that is that in his time as a wandering tom-cat he contracted FIV. This truly is a minor blemish to his record- it is NOT contagious to humans, and cats can live a long and happy life despite FIV. Check out this link for more information - Best Friends. He would probably be best in a one-cat household, but we suspect that he would do ok with some well-mannered dogs, and could test that if necessary. Please consider giving this great guy a forever home. Contact heidi@bluedogrescue.com for more information.

Ruby and Jade

Jade is a pure bred black Labrador, 8 years old, brought up on a 28-acre ranch in Ada, OK. She is potty trained, and is mostly an indoor dog. She is patient with children and great with adults, but can be protective when on walks. She is an excellent partner when jogging.

Ruby is a Dalmatian/Pointer mix, 4 years old, also brought up with Jade. Potty trained and mostly an indoor dog. She loves attention and loves to be around people. She will bark at strangers, but warms up quickly with a good pat. CM7623@att.com.

Molly

Molly is a Catahoula hound mix with all of the classic Catahoula traits. She weighs about 45 pounds, is intelligent, quick, energetic and very loving. Molly is less than a year old, is current on all of her shots, has been spayed, and is on heartworm preventative medication. She kennels very well. We are asking $100 for Molly.  Catahoulas are inquisitive and have an independent streak., but the Catahoula temperament is not suited for everyone. These dogs tend to be very protective of territory and family, and are assertive. Her independent nature, high energy and physical strength would make Molly “too much dog” for an inexperienced owner. Ideally, Molly should have obedience training, secure confinement on the owner’s property, and a daily outlet for her energy. The ideal place for Molly would be a rural setting where she has plenty of space to run, swim and explore. Contact dawn@bestfriendsboarding.com email or 800-922-4581 (Toll Free) at Best Friend’s Kennel, or her foster home at 512-303-7665.

Princess

Princess is a girl who likes to live up to her name. Lazing in bed with lots of toys and belly rubs is her idea of the good life. It's certainly an
improvement over the side of the busy road where she was found! Princess was abandoned with several other dogs near Parmer and 290, and this poor little baby had just had babies of her own. Boy, has her life in changed since then!

Princess is an American Staffordshire Terrier, about a year old, spayed, and up-to-date on her shots. She's crate- and house-trained, and is in private lessons and a group obedience class at the Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior. Though he did term her slightly "emotional" ("Please don't say I'm in trouble!!!"), Lee says Princess has the ideal personality for obedience, and would probably excel at Agility or other advanced training. More than anything, Princess wants a family of her own. She's an affectionate girl who loves to lounge and watch TV with her people. She's starting to hang out with her foster brother, a Boxer, but she would probably be happiest as an only dog. Email drumminj@yahoo.com to meet this gorgeous girl!

UPDATE: Princess has now completed an Adult Obedience class at Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior. Lee has donated 2 free private lessons to her future adopter. She now lives and plays happily with her foster brother!

Maverick

Maverick is 3 years old, heart worm negative, and on preventative treatment. He is approximately 80 lbs., neutered, and has only had 1 owner since the day he was born. His mother was my brother-in-law's dog, my husband was there the minute Maverick was born. He was the first one born hence the name, he was the Maverick of the litter. His medical record is completely clean and all his shots are up to date. He does jump fences so if he is going to be outside he would have to have a privacy fence. He is very curious and loves to inspect any new addition to the house whether it be a bag of groceries or a new pair of shoes. He is a snuggle bug who refuses to lay on anything that is not squishy and warm, including piles of laundry. His 2 favorite past times are playing with his Kong (which has lasted for 2 years with no damage) which he will throw in the air for himself and bat it all over the house, and sleeping with his owners (he likes to sleep with his head on the pillow like a person). His ears are the cutest thing ever, he cocks his head and pricks them up when you talk to him, he sits, lays down, and shakes. He is a wonderful dog but is not for anyone who is not home alot. He has alot of energy and needs to be played with, and not left alone all the time. He needs someone to love him as much as we do. meganford742@gmail.com.

Mudpie

Like his name says, Mudpie loves to cool off in the mud and play in the water. He loves people and other dogs, a good game of tug-o-war, and peanut butter doggie snacks. He is neutered, healthy and up-to-date on all shots. Come have a visit! He'd love to meet you! Just call Dorothy at 512-731-7657 or drop a note at d_vandecarr@yahoo.com.

Jesse

Jesse is a 6.5 yr old Border Collie desperately looking for home of FOSTER home. Jesse needs to be on inexpensive joint supplements daily for his hips. Jesse's former owners were not committed to providing him with his daily supplements (2 pills which he takes without hassle) so they asked his vet to euthanize him. Jesse's vet felt that euthanasia for such a manageable condition would be unethical, so she decided she would take Jesse as her own. Jesse's owners gladly signed Jesse over to his doctor. Unfortunately Jesse's vet's personal dogs were not as happy to help Jesse out and would not accept him as a new family member. Jesse's vet is desperately searching for a new or temporary home for this sweet guy. Jesse is very obedient and knows several commands and cool tricks. He does best with female dogs and no cats or assertive cats. Jesse is neutered, up-to-date on vax and heartworm prevention and fully housebroken. If you can help with Jesse, please call Stacy @ 653-5442.

Angel

Angel is a Great Pyrenees/Golden mix (per the vet) and is really loveable, house broken and loves to play with kids or just in general. She is a inside dog mostly but will stay outside sometimes when the weather is nice, not all night though.

I also have her crate trained and will donate her crate with her. She is current on all of her shots (I have her shot record) and has been fixed and micro-chipped. 512-514-1955 or MMCCOWN5@Austin.rr.com.

Chewie

This is Chewie. Chow mix between 5-6 years. Chewie is currently having to stay in a home where is crated most of the time really needs a new home with the ability to move around and run. He loves to play and is well trained but can be a little stubborn. He's quite a silly dog. Any questions, please ask. Jessica-jessicagardner@cox-internet.com

Daisy

Daisy is a sweet, fun-loving girl who is good with other dogs of all sizes and cats (we don't have the opportunity to test her with kids). She is 9 months to a year old, spayed and current on all of her shots.  We are currently fostering her, and would keep her if we could. She suffered some neglect from her previous owner, but it hasn't affected her wonderful personality. She loves to play with other dogs and sleep at her person's feet. If you would like to have Daisy at your feet, please contact us at a1live72@yahoo.com or 512-762-0105.

Thumper

Thumper is the brown dog in the pictures. The black one is her sister. Thumper is a very sweet and simple dog. All she wants is attention and to be pet, with an occasional outing. She knows simple commands, like come, go, sit, down, wait (when she wants), and leave it. She loves being with her owner, but has trouble not being the alpha dog. She is vocal. She makes certain noises when she does not like what is happening or wants attention, which is not barking or growling, but something else. One drawback is that she becomes aggressive when exposed to a submissive dog. Otherwise, she plays well with other dogs, although vocal. She would be great in a household that could give her attention and with an owner who would enjoy just sitting on the couch while petting Thumper, who would sit on the floor next to the couch. She does not fetch, has improved at swimming, and likes to go running/walking on trails.

Thumper is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations and HW negative. For more information on Thumper, email me at minor.wisdom@gmail.com.
